Are Teens Genuinely Unhappy?

Teenage years are full of intense feelings and tense emotions, heartaches, and stressing over things that seem trivial to an adult. Yet, some parents believe that their teens can't be depressed or unhappy because they are too young to understand life's true problems.

Teenage years can be challenging. So can being a parent of a teen.

According to the WHO, teen stress affects 3.6 percent of kids in the 10-14 years age bracket and 4.6 percent of 15-19 years old teenagers. Depression is estimated to affect 1.1 percent of 10-14-year-olds and 2.8 percent of 15-19-year-olds. Depression and anxiety share some symptoms, such as abrupt and unexpected mood changes.

Why Does My Teen Look Unhappy?

It may be any of the below factors that increase the risk of developing or triggering teen stress and eventually depression:

  • The desire to look good and attractive has reached an unrealistic level, making it difficult for normal-looking teenagers and even more so for those who believe they don't look good at all.

  • With constant access to the latest technology, teens are becoming more concerned about the recession, global problems, and deteriorating environment than they are about their school and homework.

  • Entitlement to money and other material things is more prevalent in this generation. Peer pressure adds to the misery, and as a result, their desires never wane.

  • Parents aren't always sure where to draw the line. As a result, they either neglect their teens or overly control them. This may cause a feeling of loneliness in a teenager as they either feel unaccepted or abused.

  • Seeing cute pictures of their peers on social media having a nice time or experience can make them feel left out, which may create uneasiness, sadness, or even jealousy.

  • They are bullied at school due to any shortcomings in their physical appearance or personality or simply because they can't gel in with the crowd.

  • Teens today are overly concerned about their careers, climate change, racism, sexism, and being single (if they are), among other things.

  • Has a dysfunctional family or has faced stressful life events, such as parental divorce, parental military service, or the death of a loved one.

  • Have been the victim or witness of violence, such as physical or sexual abuse.

  • Have a family history of depression, bipolar disorder, drug or alcohol addiction, or death by suicide.

  • Being a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender in an unsupportive environment or an environment where people frown upon such

  • Have some physical disability that restricts your teen from doing things their peers normally do, making them feel like the odd ones out.

Life Coaching for Teens

How should I know when my teen needs life coaching?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), your teenage kid might need help if they:

  • Lose interest in activities they were once fond of

  • Lack energy, seem low spirited, or reduced confidence

  • Have trouble studying, sleeping, or eating

  • Avoid social interactions and spend more time alone or indoors

  • Avoid physical exercise, poor diet, lost appetite, or binge eating

  • Start using alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

  • Engage in dangerous or destructive behavior

  • Have a suicidal tendency

  • Most of the time, they have a negative attitude, et cetera.
